I bought it, because I like to read books that someone I know was involved in. As a nurse with decades of experience … these real life stories are told in a way, that takes me right back to the ER, to the pediatric code, to the patient speaking their last words, to the sounds of ICU, to the smells … they aren’t sugar coded … they are real. Many are retired, some are pediatric, some Psych, others military, and most ICU. If your'e a nurse I doubt if you'd find anything particularly interesting or new or inspirational. Maybe this would be a book for people thinking about nursing to read as it might inspire them or make them decide nursing is not for them. Quite disappointing. This one I really liked because it made you feel in away like you were there with these nurses. The stories that each nurse chose to tell touched me in different ways. Some I cried and some I laughed. I am chronically ill for years with many hospital stays. I meant some nurse's who I will always be very grateful to. I liked how this book was written. Each chapter is a different nurse's story with a little background on their life as well. I read this book in two days. I wish it was longer. You won't be disappointed if you decide to buy this book. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dr. Tim Parker -- Stories that highlight the many virtues (and fears) of an under-acknowledged profession : I'm a little conflicted about this book. It's a collection of short narratives from nurses and highlights their strengths, fears, impressions, and patience very well. In that sense, this is a positive book about the critical role nurses play day-to-day, and how dedicated, brave, and compassionate they are. The stories are interesting and well told. But, I can't help feeling that a little more explanation in the medical sense would have added to the book, explaining some of the medical issues and treatments and helping educate readers just a little. Still, I enjoyed reading this book and think it does a solid job highlighting this underrated calling. Definitely a recommended book for everyone to read and understand.
