:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rod Dreher -- An extremely important book : I must protest strongly against that one-star review. It has no relation to reality. I just finished the book, and there were maybe five or six anti-Trump remarks in the entire text. And those comments in no way negate the incredible power of Strittmatter's reporting. Reading "We Have Been Harmonised" is a real red-pill experience. I knew that China was a techno-authoritarian state, but I did not fully appreciate how thorough and ruthless it is. At the moment, I'm writing a book about the coming of "soft totalitarianism" to the West. It was staggering to read in Strittmatter's book that all the things I fear will eventually come to the West **already exist in China**. It's not dystopian speculation -- it's reality. To read this book is to catch a glimpse of a potential American and European future, if we are not very careful. It's much closer to us than most people realize, because we too are welcoming the surveillance culture into our lives. This might be the most important book you read all year. China's present will be our future, if we don't wake up. Do not allow the author's handful of anti-Trump comments dissuade you from reading this stunning report on the threat that the Chinese techno-totalitarian leviathan poses to liberty and humanity everywhere. Having lived in China for almost 6 years and still living there today, I am always interested in seeing how the outside is interpreting what really happens here. It does so through systematic abuse, shaming, suppression of speech, imprisoning of dissenters, censoring opposing viewpoints, and flooding communities with propaganda. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sanjay V. Gopinath -- Know your enemy : The title of my review refers to the surveillance state and its masters, not the people of China. An analysis of the goals of an autocratic government is necessary to understand both why and how they deploy the organs of the state against their own citizens. This book does a fantastic job of that. If some reviewers are upset that the author maligns Trump, I'd love to hear what part of the author's comments and claims they disagree with. Trump regularly praises autocrats and the manner of his election and his style of governance happen to bring up legitimate comparisons to the methodologies employed by autocracies. While this is by no means a focus of the book, it seems to be the focus of certain reviews. Many congratulations to the author, who is clearly extremely knowledgeable about China, and to the translator as the English is very good indeed and I assume the original manuscript is in German. Was hoping for details about how the Chinese Social Credit system actually works, not a long list of how bad the Chinese government is. He has studied the historical and cultural notions of the country which is most essential in understanding the present economic powerhouse of the world. In his view CCP is no different from the system of government practised by autocrats of ancient Chinese dynasties. His writings on the all encompassing surveillance society invented and pragmatically implemented in modern Chinese state is spine chilling.
